Landscape Sensitivity to Mass Wasting Developed a GIS-based model for predicting and classifying landscape sensitivity to mass wasting for Pacific Lumber Company (PALCO). The model is based on a variety of factors (e.g., slope gradient, slope shape, geomorphic association, soil, bedrock geology) each given numerical ratings and then combined to generate a spatial map of the potential mass wasting hazard. The model is used to stratify the forest landscape into hazard zones for individual and watershed-wide THP planning. PWA also collaborated with PALCO in the development of the “Disturbance Index,” a quantitative measure of cumulative effects. Both planning tools were incorporated in the Federal and State-approved Habitat Conservation Plan for the entire PALCO ownership. (Pacific Lumber Company, Scotia, CA.) |
