Erosion and Sediment Control Field School, Tom Leroy, 2022

PWA provided major technical elements of the recent Erosion and Sediment Control Field School, held in the Trinity River watershed from June 13-15, 2022, in partnership with Salmonid Restoration Federation (SRF), Five Counties Salmonid Conservation Program, and the Watershed Center. This technical field course was part of SRF's Northern California Best Management Practices Education Series funded by the California Department of Fish and Wildlife’s Fisheries Restoration Grant Program. It assisted planners, regulators, environmental scientists, engineers, and landowners in learning how to identify the causes of key erosion processes, how to improve environmental protection through the implementation of practical, scientifically based treatment strategies, and how to treat chronic road surface erosion and prevent stream crossing failures. Tom Leroy, a Senior Engineering Geologist at PWA, gave presentations on the fundamentals of water quality impacts and road erosion processes, including how to identify the main types of road-related erosion, development of prioritized and cost-effective treatment practices, and preparation and implementation of post-fire erosion assessments and treatment plans. Video recordings of several presentations are available to stream at https://vimeo.com/showcase/9708837.
